| To take into account these various reservations concerning existing research and to propose, and then test, a conceptual model of dental patient satisfaction in a Hong Kong Chinese population using the structural equation modelling technique. | To investigate the effect of fluconazole on phenotypic attributes of 10 oral isolates each of albicans and krusei derived from HIV-infected individuals in Hong Kong; to genotype the Candida isolates so evaluated, using an array of tools to establish a relationship, if any, between the foregoing phenotypic features attributable to antifungal exposure, and the respective genotypic profiles; to monitor the MIC of fluconazole against Candida isolates throughout the study using the "E-test" to correlate the antimycotic sensitivity patterns with the phenotypic and the genotypic profiles. |

| To carry out an oral health epidemiological study among 3-6 year old kindergarten children in Conghua county, PRC; to carry out a questionnaire survey among parents/grandparents concerning the oral hygiene and dietary habits of the children; to evaluate the oral health effects of establishing a tooth-brushing program as part of the daily hygiene activities of these children; to evaluate the needs for treatment and the needs for continued tooth-brushing instruction or alternative preventive action as these children move into primary school. |

| Abstract: |
| To establish an "artificial mouth system" to study the ecology of oral bacterial biofilms associated with root caries lesions; to study the cariogenicity of oral bacteria isolated from root caries lesions of human root tissues using the artificial mouth system established. |

| Abstract: |
| To analyze the clinical samples directly without the need of bacterial cultivation of the biofilm from artificial mouth; to complement existing bacterial identification of microflora in root surface caries that are close phylogenetically species such as oral streptococci, lactobacilli and actinomyces; to enhance the establishment of the molecular genamics in the Oral BioScience Unit which has already established the PCR technique in the study of Candida. |

| To identify A. actinomycetemcomitans and the presence of the leukotoxin gene lktA and promoter region of the leukotoxin operon in A. actinomycetemcomitans from subgingival plaque samples of Chinese subjects with or without periodontal diseases by using polymerase chain reaction; to investigate the serotypes of the A. actinomycetemcomitans isolated from the subgingival plague samples of Chinese subjects with or without periodontal disease by using indirect immuinofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies. |
