Frontier Technology
Introduction
The development of new technologies enables researchers to carry out investigations that were previously next to impossible. Current computer technologies, for example, can process billions of calculations per second. HKU researchers are trying to improve on that so the door of discovery can be opened even wider. They are also developing new technologies that could amass a comprehensive list of genomic and proteomic changes associated with disease, and looking at how to improve distributed computer systems, which collect, process and transmit information from dispersed locations. Nanotechnologies are being developed to help researchers engineer body tissues for re-growth and repair and produce new medicines and implants. Technology is also central in the investigation of compounds, particularly those related to traditional Chinese medicine, that could lead to new drug discoveries.
