AoE: Launched by Hong Kong's University Grants Committee in 1997 and now administered by the Research Grants Council, the AoE scheme aims to nurture areas of international excellence through high-quality research and inter-institutional collaboration.   4. 973 Program: The 973 Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China aims to strengthen basic research in line with national strategic targets. Members of the HKU Shenzhen Institute of Research and Innovation are eligible to apply for funding.
