Project Title:Public disclosure, stock price efficiency and investment efficiency
Investigator(s):Dr. Chan D.K.W.
Department:School of Business
Source(s) of Funding:Hong Kong Research Grants Council Competitive Earmarked Research Grants
Start Date:08/2003
Abstract:
To study a model that integrates the corporate public disclosures and investment decisions with a stock market in which information acquisition is costly and prices are partially revealing. The analysis focuses on the link between corporate investment decisions and stock-price formation; to disclose decisions are studied in a setting in which an IPO firm chooses the level of public disclosure to trade off the effects of public disclosure on the cost of capital and investment efficiency. An equilibrium is derived in which the level of public disclosure, the amount of private information production, the amount of investment and the cost of capital are all linked to specific characteristics of the firm, of the information traders, and of the market. Comparative static results will be studied. Empirical and policy implications will be discussed; to examine the link among public disclosures, private information production, the cost of capital, and investment efficiency.

Abstract:
To collect information (a) on the extent to which the Hong Kong government regulates and intervenes in trade unions' internal affairs, and the impact of this on trade union organisation and activities at the point of change of the Territory's sovereign to the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1997; and (b) the opinions of the different parties to labour relations in Hong Kong on possible changes in the extent of government supervision after 1 July 1997. To develop an explanatory framework for the extent of such government regulation of, and intervention in, the trade unions' internal affairs in Hong Kong in mid-1990s, utilising earlier work on trade union legal frameworks in the U.K., other EU countries and the U.S.A. by Professor Fosh, and that of Frenkel (1993) on Pacific Asian trade union patterns. To understand the interplay of legal, political, economic and institutional factors in times of rapid change, and of the role of trade unions as one interest group involved in maintaining the checks and balances of a democratic society.
