Researcher : Cristaudo WA

Project Title:The Dialogical Thinking of Franz Rosenzweig and Eugen Rosenstock'-Huessy
Investigator(s):Cristaudo WA
Department:History
Source(s) of Funding:Small Project Funding
Start Date:12/2005
Abstract:
Research on Franz Rosenzweig's relationship to Hegel and neo-Hegelianism; Eugen Rosenstock's Huessy's interpretation of Europe's revolutionary Foundations and the Ongoing Legacy of Those Foundations; Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy's diagnosis of the Roots and Legacy of the First World War; and the philosophical relationship between Franz Rosenzweig and Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy and the relevance that their thought has for contemporary social theory. Key Issues and problems: The paper on Rosenzweig and Hegel and the neo-Hegelians will explore to what extent Rosenzweig's engagement with Hegel in his first book (Hegel under der Staat) is a hybrid of neo-Hegelian and Hegelian themes which put him in an ambivalent position to subsequent twentieth century neo-Hegelian (which encompasses Nietzschean) discourses. Like the neo-Hegelians, Rosenzweig's critique of Hegel is based upon the primacy of the contingent and the asphyxiation of the totality. But whereas the neo-Hegelians tend to oscillate between an abstract communalism (Feuerbach and Marx- whose rationale of the proletariat as the revolutionary social force resides precisely in its potential universalism) and individualism (Stirner) Rosenzweig's apologia for his Judaism is redolent of Hegel's in that his theory of identity is not grounded in a view of freedom as a dialectic of the negative. Nevertheless, Rosenzweig departs significantly from Hegel in his elevation of religious bonding and the bloodline (the essence of Judaism, for Rosenzweig) above the nation-state. His position opens up a range of problems about identity that elude both Hegelian and neo-Hegelian frameworks. While there are a number of works exploring Rosenzweig's relationship to Hegel, there is nothing I know of that looks more closely at his relationship to neo-Hegelianism. In the paper on Rosenstock's interpretation of Europe I will argue that his analysis of Europe as an act of faith and his arguments about the unity of Europe laying in the cross fertilization of its revolutionary past assists us in seeing some of the more durable components of European identity. I will look at the problems Rosenstock’s interpretation holds for the Kantian/ moralistic approach to politics which seems to be so widespread amongst apologists for the European Union, whilst emphasizing the more robust bonds which he argues bestow what genuine unity there is in Europe. Rosenstock-Huessy is almost unknown to philosophers and social theorists, but in European Studies, at least in Germany, his book 'The European Revolutions or the Character of Nations' (which has not been translated into English) is a classic work in Europeanist socio-political analysis. My study on Rosenstock's diagnosis of the sources and outcomes of the First World War will focus upon his early work 'The Marriage of Law and Revolution, 'linking it up to his other writings of the 1920s. Very little of this material is still known in Germany and nothing has ever been written on it in English. The Rosenstock-Huessy Society has just recently released a DVD collection of almost everything Rosenstock published in his lifetime. The amount of material is massive and this is a great scholarly opportunity to analyze one of Europe’s most impost important Europeanists. All these papers are preliminary components of the main task, viz. a book exploring the engagement between Franz Rosenzweig and Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy. At the heart of their dialogue was the conviction that the secularist idealism of their day could not fill the void of ‘the death of God’, that, on the contrary, it would generate its own catastrophes. Rosenstock’s writings in the early 1920s are particularly prescient regarding Germany’s fascist future. Both see religious symbols as generated within a specific orientation to reality which a purely naturalist symbolism cannot adequately express. While one drew deeply from Judaism and the other Christianity, both take speech rather than ‘things’ as the starting point for understanding human experience and society. My book will focus upon: their common philosophical heritage and the experience that the First World War plays in their critical engagement with the philosophical tradition; their common diagnosis of the ills of modernity; the most important details of the respective symbolisms (both preferred the term ‘names’) they draw upon and the reinvigoration they bring, respectively to Jewish and Christian thought, and the West generally, through their exposition of the enduring historical and existential significance of those names/ symbols; the overlap, differences and contemporary relevance of their work. I will be tracing their link to the nineteenth century, particularly Hegel, Schelling and the neo-Hegelians and Nietzsche, as well as placing their thought within the context of other trends in twentieth century thought, particularly phenomenology (including Heidegger’s later thought), critical theory and post-structuralism.

Project Title:Nuns on screen: the changing face of modern women religious in post World War II film
Investigator(s):Sabine MA
Department:Comparative Literature
Source(s) of Funding:Competitive Earmarked Research Grants (CERG)
Start Date:01/2005
Abstract:
To examine how nuns are respresented in mainstream, and mainly English language, film since the Second World War and what cultural myths of gender and religion shape their cinematic projection; to study the underlying institutional and sexual politics of their filmic representation, and consider how the images and stereotypes projected on screen compare to the diverse and often substantial roles that nuns actually played in the development of modern society, and the changes, in turn, that modern secular society produced in nuns' lives and religious community.

Project Title:Soviet Relations with Tibet and Xinjiang, 1945-1991
Investigator(s):Share MB
Department:History
Source(s) of Funding:Hsu Long Sing Research Fund
Start Date:01/2005
Completion Date:01/2006
Abstract:
(1) Both Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces are geographically quite remote, mountainous, sparsely populated, and largely inhabited by non-Chinese peoples. While China has claimed sovereignty over both provinces since the eighteenth century, its control was loose. Following the Chinese Revolution of 1911, Tibet and Xinjiang largely regained their independence and maintained it until the People's Liberation Army regained full Chinese control during the 1950's. Since then, elements of each provinces's populations still have sought to establish their own state. (2) European nations have taken advantage of these aspirations as well as weak Chinese political and military control, to try to gain political and economic hegemony over Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces from the late nineteenth century on. Among the concerned European nations was a very active Russia and Soviet Union. Britain nearly went to war with Russia 100 years ago over Tibet. The Soviet Union established an "independent" Eastern Turkestan Republic in Xinjiang from 1944 to 1949,after which her new Chinese ally, the People's Republic of China (PRC), assumed full sovereignty. (3) My new project seeks to examine Soviet policy and activities toward Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991.
