Abstract:

The constructs of Individualism and Constructivism have dominated cross-cultural psychology for the last 15 years. However, research has been hampered by poor measuring instruments. In particular the PI's attempts to validate the two main current measures in the PRC have ended in failure. This research is designed to evaluate and improve if necessary on a promising.

Project Title:

The Disposition to Forgive in Cross-cultural Perspective

Investigator(s):

Watkins DA

Department:

Education Faculty

Source(s) of Funding:

Small Project Funding

Start Date:

12/2006

Abstract:

The main objectives of this research are to investigate the role of individualism-collectivism (I-C) and the nature of the disposition to forgive in societies which differ widely in geographical location, cultural values, and religious beliefs. For too long Psychology has focussed primarily on the study of what has gone wrong in society, such as delinquency, drug addiction, child abuse, suicide, and mental illness. However, it is now being realised that if Psychology is to be a force for good in our world today it also needs to understand how to promote positive human values and prosocial behaviours. Thus much work is now being done on previously neglected topics such as 'forgiveness', 'gratitude' 'trust', 'hope' and the promotion of peace and international understanding. Reviews of forgiveness research (e.g. McCullough, 2001) have reported that the disposition to forgive in interpersonal situations is related to religious belief and personality correlates such as high self-esteem, low anxiety, and high subjective well-being. However, most of this research has been done in individualistic North American society. Research in collaboration with my former PhD student Fu Hong, has shown that in the more collectivist PRC, however, it is not such personality correlates but rather Chinese collectivist traits such as the desire for a harmonious society and a focus on relationships that influence forgiveness (Fu, Watkins, & Hui, 2004, 2006). Similar findings have been in found in a study in the worlds only Hindu kingdom, Nepal (Watkins & Regmi, 2004). This research further examines the role of I-C in forgiveness within and across cultures. It is designed to test hypotheses proposed by Worthington (2006) based on a distinction between decisional forgiveness (a decision about behavioral intentions toward an offender) and emotional forgiveness (an experience of reduced negative emotion associated with increased conciliatory and benevolent motivations). Worthington predicts that collectivism is associated with decisional forgiveness and individualism with emotional forgiveness but this important claim has never been subjected to cross-cultural testing.
