Abstract:
The propagation and properties of nonlinear waves in physical and engineering systems have been studied intensively. Among the various applications, the fields of hydrodynamics and optics are chosen here to illustrate the fundamental principles. A soliton (or solitary wave) is a localized wave which propagates over long distance as a result of a balance between nonlinearity and dispersion. Special families of solitary waves are employed to model weakly nonlinear surface gravity waves in hydrodynamics, and the transmission of solitons along fibers in nonlinear optics.
