Investigator(s):Prof. Lo S.H., Prof. Zhou D.
Department:Civil Engineering
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:01/2003

Abstract:
To study the three-dimensional vibration characteristics of structural components in the form of thick beam, plate, shell, torus, etc. The analysis is based on linear, small-strain, three-dimensional elasticity theory. The Ritz method is employed to derive the eigenvalue equation. Rapid convergence rate, stable numerical operations and highly accurate results can be obtained by selecting the Chebyshev polynomials as admissible functions in the analysis. The investigation will focus on some important topics with practical significance in civil engineering. Dynamic characteristics of thick plate, shell and torus on elastic foundations, thick plate and shell with line supports, point supports, built-in end supports, and other more complex support conditions will be studied in detail. With a slight modification, forced vibration of thick plate under various boundary conditions can also be tackled. Potential applications to dynamic and earthquake design of buildings, road pavements and bases for heavy machines will be explored.
