| To compare the effect on cognitive function of tramadol vs fentanyl, the best 'conventional' opioid so far concerning cognitive impairment. The current study is one of our steps in substantiating further the advantages of tramadol. Our ultimate aim is to do a formal cost-effectiveness analysis of using different opioids which will conclude our search for the 'ideal' analgesic for post-operative PCA. |

| To find out (a) whether conscious sedation with midazolam could be carried out using BIS values as indicators of the degree of sedation; (b) whether the degree of amnesia during surgery under midazolam sedation could be predicted with the BIS values recorded during surgery and (c) whether BIS values could be used for fitness of discharge of patients after midazolam sedation. |
