Research Services (RS) provides administrative support for the Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and the University Research Committee (URC) and aims to support and promote research at HKU by

Research at HKU – including interdisciplinary research – is supported at the Department/Faculty level and centrally. RS works closely with academic departments and faculties, including working with Faculty Research Committees, which identify, co-ordinate and advise on the development of research in each Faculty and on the preparation and presentation of research proposals and which also are called on by the URC to provide advice in the policy-making process.

In RS, a team of dedicated research administrators led by a Senior Assistant Registrar that includes more than 10 members at Assistant Registrar, Administrative Assistant and Executive Officer levels provides support, with specific colleagues serving academics from Biology and Medicine (M Panel), Business Studies (B Panel), Engineering (E Panel), Humanities and Social Sciences (H Panel), and Physical Sciences (P Panel). The new Research Information Management System (RIMS), launched in 2022, is an enhanced web-based portal for managing research and conference grants, agreements, awards/fellowships and outputs at HKU (replacing the former Research & Conference Grants Administration System and Research Outputs System).

The work of RS in supporting and facilitating research administration is part of a network of offices at the University that assist cross-department interdisciplinary research as well as the general research process (covering grant application, research facilities, research outputs, patents, commercialisation, research assessment, prizes and awards, etc.). These offices include the Technology Transfer OfficeKnowledge Exchange OfficeMainland Research Projects Office, Finance and Enterprises OfficeHuman Resources, Libraries, Estates Office, Safety Office, Information Technology Services, etc. The University undertook a comprehensive consultation and review of the research administration process (starting in 2021) under the Task Force on Research Administration and is implementing various new measures, e.g., having a new office to provide a one-stop-shop service for research administration.
