Abstract:
To map, in detail (1:25000 scale) subduction complex rocks which crop out immediately south of the Xigaze ophiolite; to examine the stratigraphy, structure, sedimentology, and metamorphism of this subduction complex and thereby determine its evolution; to examine heavily disrupted zones (Yamdrok melange) which lie further to the south and likely represent collisional melanges; to further examine syn-collisional sediments so as to provide constraints on possible oblique-slip and to place constraints on various docking events during the collision; to construct a time/space diagram to constrain temporal/tectonic relationships, if any, between terranes.

Project Title:Amalgamation of the north China craton
Investigator(s):Dr. Sun M., Prof. Wilde S.A.
Department:Earth Sciences
Source(s) of Funding:Hong Kong Research Grants Council Competitive Earmarked Research Grants
Start Date:12/2000
Abstract:
A new model, that the North China Craton is divided into three blocks that amalgamated in the Palaeoproterozoic rather than the Archaean, will be rigorously tested in the project. The project will provide the necessary base for ultimately determining the palaeogeographic location of the three blocks of the North China Craton prior to their assembly and also their location in a possible Palaeoproterozoic supercontinent at the time of amalgamation.
