To develop a general method for optimal higher order spectral analysis of symbolic signals, and apply it to genomic sequence analysis. Specific aims are to develop a general optimal mapping methodology for both nonlinear and linear analyses; develop practical higher order spectra analytical algorithms with optimal mapping for symbolic signals. Emphasis will be placed on bi-spectral analysis, tri-spectral analysis, cross-spectral analysis, and the various corresponding integrated forms; apply the developed algorithms to DNA sequence and protein sequence analysis.

The main objective of this project is the development of microcavity organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Abstract:
This is a comprehensive study of the robust statistics-based adaptive filters and further its applications. More specifically, the research team plan to extend the robust statistics-based adaptive filtering technique to other conventional algorithms so that a complete spectrum of robust adaptive filers with different tradeoff between performance and arithmetic complexity can be obtained. Another objective is to investigate the applications of these robust adaptive algorithms to subspace tracking in impulse noise environment.

Understanding the nature of the GaN/oxynitride interface is just as important now as it was for the Si/SiO2 interface system in the early 1960's. The impetus of this project originates in our awareness that many machine vision applications require the efficient processing of images of bi-level objects. The information contained in a bi-level image is often rich enough for many inspection and recognition systems. However, all imaging systems cause blurring of the images. With these in mind, we investigate a novel approach to the deblurring of bi-level images that is formulated specifically to take advantage of their unique features. We tackle the general case where the blur is not known beforehand, a problem called blind deconvolution in the literature. Machine vision systems need to be accurate and fast. A powerful mathematical technique called convex optimization is very suitable for such requirements and has been applied to many engineering problems in recent years. We therefore aim at developing a robust blind deconvolution algorithm based on this technque, especially for machine vision applications.

Multicode code division multiple access (CDMA) has been introduced as a new transmission scheme for high speed and flexible data rate communication in third generation (3G) mobile communications. Abstract:
To develop a workable market mechanism for coordinating or regulating the maintenance scheduling submitted by different generation companies with power system operating reliability requirement and other operating constraints well taken into account, and to evaluate the reasonableness of the market mechanism proposed by investigating strategic behavior of generation companies in making maintenance scheduling based on the well-developed game theory methodology. New mathematical models, methods and algorithms will be developed and implemented. It is expected that the research outcomes of this project will provide important references for policymakers or electricity market designers in figuring out market mechanisms for coordinating or regulating the maintenance scheduling of generation companies in the competitive electricity market environment.

Ga-As-based heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been widely used as the power amplifier in mobile handsets because of its advantages in linearity and power added efficiency. In the current project, a kind of HBT power amplifier, InGaP/GaAsSb will be developed which has better performance than the current GaAs-based HBTs for wireless communication.
