Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Environment and Conservation Fund
Start Date:04/2001
Abstract:
To provide information on (a) Variation in breast milk concentrations of dioxin like compounds (international toxic equivalents) in a representative sample of primaparous nursing mothers recruited in several districts of the SAR. (b) The analyses will be supported by information on past geographical place of residence, usual dietary preferences and intake and other lifestyle factors. (c) Comparison will be made with comparable data from the Asia Pacific region and other data from both the east and west, industrialised and rural areas. (d) An estimate will be made of the contribution which is made to total dioxin intake in the first year of life for an average breast fed infant in Hong Kong.

Investigator(s):Lam TH, Ho DCW, Lo ECM, Macfarlane DJ, Au TKF, MacPherson KL
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Seed Funding for Strategic Research Theme
Start Date:05/2005
Abstract:
Obesity is an emerging epidemic in China. The environment we live has a profound influence on our behaviour, yet the contextual features of the physical activity and dietary environment have largely been neglected. Changing current obesogenic behaviour, particularly in those with chronic disease, relies very much on understanding more about how the individual, the family, the school, the neighbourhood and urban form, as well as commercial, cultural and social practices of a society interact to mould behavioural choices. Serveral interdisciplinary groups who have an interest in investigating various aspects of the obesogenic environment and its interaction with chronic disease are formed.

Project Title:Evaluation of mobile screening service for older people in Shamshuipo
Investigator(s):McGhee SM, Ho LM, Abdullah ASM, Lee ACK
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Health Promotion Projects
Start Date:01/2001
Abstract:
To identify the prevalence of previously unidentified morbidity and risk factors in a vulnerable group of over 60 year old people in Shamshuipo; to assess the effectiveness of the proposed strategy and identify potential improvements in a) reaching the target group, b) achieving attendance of the target group at the clinic, c) achieving follow-up of those identified to be at risk of health problems; to model the likely impact of the clinic on future morbidity and mortality in this group, taking into account the results of objectives above to value that impact in terms of health gain and resource costs.

Investigator(s):McGhee SM
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Health and Health Services Research Fund - Full Grants
Start Date:06/2004
Abstract:
To use a representative sample of the local population in order to obtain a series of valuations of health states that are locally relevant and are based on the SF36 HK; to use these valuations to derive a model which will predict the value for each health state described by the SF36 HK and which will be of immense benefit in Hong Kong; to compare the final model results with a similar model already derived for the UK population in order to identify any systematic differences in valuations between the two populations which will be a large step forward in determining the feasibility of a global measure for comparisons between populations.

Investigator(s):McGhee SM, Watts C.
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Other Funding Scheme
Start Date:07/1995
Abstract:
To determine the willingness of travellers to pay for Hepatitis A vaccine; to investigate where travellers obtain their advice on travel health.

Project Title:The health benefits of reduced air pollution: value and trade-offs
Investigator(s):McGhee SM, Fielding R, Ho LM, Wong CM
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Health Care and Promotion Fund - Research Grant Projects
Start Date:06/2001
Abstract:
To determine the willingness of a population sample to pay for specific reductions in their risk of adverse health effects.

Project Title:How stable is exercise type and pattern in those attending the department of Health's Elderly Health centres and how reliable is its reporting?
Investigator(s):McGhee SM, Leung GM, Schooling CM, Lam TH, Chan W.M., Ho KS
Department:Community Medicine
Source(s) of Funding:Seed Funding Programme for Basic Research
Start Date:02/2004
Abstract:
To determine how well the baseline exercise data collected by the Elderly Health centre attendees between 1998-2000 represent a stable exercise pattern and past activity levels.

Project Title:Quality adjusted life years (QALYS) - population-specific measurement of the quality component

Abstract:
To determine changes in clinically significant parameters including blood pressure and indices of obesity resulting from the introduction of the physical activity intervention; to determine which factors contribute to engagement in physical activity for each of the programs; to determine the effectiveness and durability of the introduction of both a "buddy" system and the feedback effect of pedometers on physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness changes over 12 months of intensive intervention; to further develop our understanding of the relationship between physical activity and chronic disorders in the local elderly population; to explore the relationship between the different measures of physical activity in the local population; to determine the cost-effectiveness of these two intervention programs.

Start Date:02/1998
Abstract:
To evaluate the exposure-response relationship between air pollution and health impacts; to assess the health impacts and their monetary costs on the population due to air pollution; to assess the road traffic-related exposure based on proportions of ambient and air quality and exposure population; to evaluate the road traffic-related health impacts and their monetary costs.
